Geometry
In all traditions, by following the principles of geometry, the work will have the same underlying rhythms and relationships found in the stars and planets, to the particles and atoms that form everything on Earth. Subconsciously the viewer will recognise and relate to these patterns. The result, it can be argued, when executed well, produces work that displays the qualities that inspire thoughts of unity, stillness and reflectiveness.
In this series of works, William has both constructed and made variations of patterns from masterpieces of the Islamic tradition. Patterns that have proportional harmonies in common with the sizes and orbits of particular planets, the choice of metals and pigments used in an image begins from an understanding of the alchemical relationship between the seven base metals and the seven visible planets. These being: Gold - Sun, Silver - Moon, Mercury - Mercury, Copper - Venus, Iron - Mars, Tin - Jupiter and Lead - Saturn.
